From Dictator to Dictator:
Nicaraguan Activists Speak Out About Past and Present Struggles for Justice and the Ongoing Fight to Free Today's Political Prisoners

    Dora Maria Téllez & Ana Margarita Vijil visit UVA campus

    From November 14 to 17 Nicaraguan activist and previous Sandinista commander Dora María Téllez and Nicaraguan human rights activist Ana Margarita Vijil will be visiting the UVA campus to talk to students, faculty and community members about their experiences under Nicaragua’s current dictatorship and their visions for change.

    After enduring solitary imprisonment for twenty months, both women were let free thanks to the pressure of foreign human rights groups. They have nonetheless been stripped of their Nicaraguan citizenship and continue to fight for the freedom of other imprisoned activists and an end to Nicaragua’s current dictatorship.

    During their stay with us, Dora and Ana Margarita, in addition to visiting classes, participating in a round table, and offering a reception, will be available to students or colleagues who wish to interact with them. Two international filmmakers, Victoria Schultz, from Finland, and Gabriel Serra, from Nicaragua, now exiled in Mexico, will be on campus to film the presence of Dora and Ana Margarita. Their recordings will be part of future films.
